Spring has finally arrived, the flowers are blooming and the sun has started to show its face again. It's traditionally time for spring cleaning and coming out of hibernation. For many of us it's when we decide to get healthy again and start a spring “cleanse” of all those bad habits we picked up. This week we are looking at the 5 ways you can start spring right.

 

Enjoy The Sun

With the sun starting to shine it's time to get out there and enjoy it! Though the weather can be charitably called changeable, it's still a great time to enjoy the sun and see more then the inside of your house. Parks and gardens are exploding with colour and life and when the sun does shine it can really shake out the cobwebs from winter. And this is backed up science as well; during winter most of us don't get anywhere near enough vitamin D or exercise, and getting out in the sun can help fix that.

 

Eat Healthy (and try all the new seasonal food)

During the winter a lot of us fall into the same trap, eating what we want as the dark and cold drive us to our comfort food (no matter how bad it is for us). Even for those of us who want to be healthy the only option is to get your veg from halfway across the world. For those who are environmentally conscious this can be a huge conundrum. Even if you don't mind vegetables that have been frozen and flown around the world, they just don't taste as good. With spring upon us though locally grown fresh fruit and veg is starting to appear again. From March there is huge amount of fresh fruit and veg out there for you to enjoy. They range from New Potatoes to Spinach or for a sweeter tooth fruit like Rhubarb.

 

Stop Smoking

With the introduction of anti-smoking laws in 2007 that stopped people smoking inside public places and the rise of 2nd hand smoke awareness, most smokers don't smoke inside anymore. During the winter then it is normally a miserable experience to be a smoker. The rain and cold turn the act of smoking into more of a chore than anything else. Spring though lets us all go outside more, and that can lead to you smoking more. Suddenly being outside is enjoyable again, and the common line of thought is "while you are outside you might as well smoke?".

Lack of sleep causes a whole host of problems from elevated blood pressure to lowering your immune system. And it can be so easy to fall into bad habits. After all when most of the day is dark anyway it can be easy to forget the time, and not get the 7 to 8 hours that we should. Spring though can be a great time to get your sleep sorted.

To get your sleep sorted doctors suggest two things, only drink caffeine before noon and create a sleep routine. Caffeine stays in our system hours after we drink it with some estimates saying up to 14 hours! That means that cup of tea at 4pm can keep you awake into the wee hours. But even if you avoid caffeine, getting enough sleep can still be hard. Luckily our bodies are designed to sleep on a schedule. If you can keep to a routine you will notice how quickly your body adapts and falling asleep becomes easy.
