New survey shows how in Europe Electronic Cigarettes have helped over 15 million people to cut down and quit smoking (with a small bit of help from the best E-Cig around)

A couple of weeks back a prominent scientific journal which focuses on addiction (unsurprisingly called Addiction) released the findings they got from the biggest European survey on e-cigarette conducted so far. Although the general message is by now unsurprising, that e-cigarettes help people, the numbers they quoted are worthy of note. In their article they said that electronic cigarettes have helped over 15 million people either quit smoking or cut down.

The numbers break down to about 6 million people who have used e-cigarettes to quit completely and about 9 million who have cut down with e-cigs. One of the lead researchers, a Dr Konstantinos, said "These are probably the highest rates of smoking cessation and reduction ever observed in such a large population study".  The study pooled the date from over 48 million people around Europe, these are all people who have at least tried e-cigarettes. That means almost 1 in 3 people who try an e-cigarette go on to use it to, at the very least, cut down. Considering then that cigarettes are one of the most addictive and harmful consumer items out there, is saying something.

Dr Konstantinos goes on "The European Union data show that the use of electronic cigarettes seems to have a positive impact on public health for two main reasons: 1. High smoking cessation and reduction rates are observed, and 2. Electronic cigarette use is largely confined to smokers (current and former), with minimal use by non-smokers."

The second point then is perhaps the more important information in this report, the fact that e-cigarette users are almost exclusively ex-smokers. When the e-cigarette first became widely used one of the most common arguments against it was the worry that non-smokers would start to use them, and they would become a gateway to real cigarettes. But out of all the people asked only 0.8 of people who have tried both e-cigs and cigarettes tried the e-cig first. A collaborator on the report, Neuro-Scientist and researcher, Jacques Le Houezec even said "In non-smokers we observed some experimentation with electronic cigarettes, but regular use is minimal... Practically, there is no current or regular use of nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes by non-smokers, so the concern that electronic cigarettes can be a gateway to smoking is largely rejected by our findings."
